Hollywood movie directors gush over Kojima's latest Metal Gear trailer
Hollywood's power players are getting a little over-excited about that Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain trailer
Now, we've been known to lose our s**t sometimes, and we're sure you guys have gotten more than a little excited about games, but the likes of Guillermo del Toro, Nicolas Winding Refn, Avi Arad and Shinya Tsukamoto are engaging in a circle jerk the likes of which we haven't seen since high school.
These are just some of the reactions to Hideo Kojima's latest trailer on Konami's official website:
"Watching the trailers for MGSV makes you wonder if the spirits of Dostoyevsky, Stanley Kubrick, and Caravaggio entered Hideo Kojima's body because, using the art of gaming as his canvas, he boldly goes where no one has gone before," said Refn, who director ultra-violent movies Drive and Only God Forgives.
Yes. I know when I first saw Snake rub dead man's ashes over his face the first things that came to my mind was Russian literary realism, Italian Baroque art, American nu-Hollywood cinema and erm, Star Trek.
And Oldboy director Park Chan-wook dropped a quote I'd imagine Kojima has been waiting for his whole life: "He has actually been making films in his own way already. Metal Gear Solid games are already films, the films of the future."
THE FILMS OF THE FUTURE. Does that mean movies are the games of the future?
Tsukamoto, director of low-budget techno-gore movie Tetsuo: The Iron Man, reckons that "by the time you finish this game, you should be changed into a completely new person". Presumably by jamming the game into your own skin and fiddling around with it until you morph into some kind of human-game hybrid.
We love Kojima. We love Metal Gear Solid. But this obsession with being validated by the movie business is embarrassing and tired. What's wrong with celebrating games as their own medium?
