All the pics, footage & details from Kojima's MGS 5: Phantom Pain PS4 stream
Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain's PS4 gameplay was broadcast live today on the Kojima Station stream, showing off what the press got to see last week at E3 2014. We've got all of the footage, pics and details right here.
You can watch it all, right here:
So what happened? Well, we got a recap of Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes in short trailer form, followed by this very odd interlude in which ballet dancers performed CQC takedowns on each other.
No really, look:
We then saw footage of Kojima at E3, starting with Microsoft's conference, Sony's conference and more. Look at how happy he is:
We then saw the reaction to Kojma's new The Phantom Pain trailer during Sony's conference The crowd went a bit nuts:
After a lot of chatter about Kojima's magical E3 adventure, we were treated to the newest Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain trailer.
Then after what sounded like a lot of fan questions, Kojima pimped out Mike Oldfield's song Nuclear, which is used in the game's latest trailer:
15 hours later, the actual PS4 gameplay began with Snake and Ocelot riding through the desert on horse-back. Ocelot asks if he's gotten used to his prosthetic arm yet, and warns that Kaz Miller has been kidnapped. He's out there in the open world.
Ocelot says that only Snake can do this mission solo, as he needs to rediscover himself after nine years spent in a coma. He says it's the only way he will return to being the true Big Boss. He's told he can explore at will and tackle this mission however he wants, before sending the player off into the big, wide open world. It's 200 times larger then the environment in Ground Zeroes.
He then sets off on his horse and the game begins. It's all very big and visually impressive. The sheer scale of the landscape should go down well with fans of vast open worlds.
Suddenly, the music changes to a more tense track to indicate that there were enemies around, so the player scoped out an outpost ahead with his binoculars to tag troops on the map.
He then rode up to the outpost on the side of his horse to remain hidden before using his tranquilliser pistol to take them out. He then attached the Fulton Recovery System to their passed-out bodies to take them back to Mother Base.
He also did it to this sheep. Animals also have uses in Mother Base.
The player's iDroid device warns that a sandstorm is on the way, and this is part of the game's dynamic weather mechanic. Storms hamper visibility but keep you hidden. He warned that using Fulton Recovery balloons in storms isn't advised as it can be blown off course and the soldier might die.
He then spotted a glint on the horizon, indicating that there were raw diamonds nearby. These can be collected and stored back at Mother Base, then spent on upgrades and used in crafting. The game's currency is known as GMP.
Once at the base where Miller is being held, Snake pulls out his e-cig 'Phantom Cigar' which speeds up time. Moving into the base under the cover of darkness is to be advised, but for the sake of the demo, the player kept things light. Opening the map at night will reveal which tagged guards are sleeping. This is useful.
The player explained that the iDroid device can be used to call upon your Mother base scouts for mission intel, while its R&D department can make items that are then sent to you via air drop. We see him order his team to craft and deliver a cardboard box.
Snake is able to use Fulton Recovery on soldiers while inside the box too, which is daft but really neat.
An enemy sees the box moving and comes to investigate. Snake hurries around a corner and abandons the box, effectively making it a decoy. The troop investigates the empty box while the player gets the drop on him. Clever.
You can also use Fulton Recovery on vehicles and send them back to Mother Base.
Deeper into the outpost, the player finds a POW and rescues him. He's an actual member of Kojima Productions. We're guessing Kojima himself is in there somewhere. Interestingly, he has to carry the chap outside before using Fulton Recovery, as it obviously can't pass through ceilings.
After securing intel on Miller's location, Snake is spotted, and the player calls in an air strike on the outpost, as well as calling in air extraction via Morpho's chopper. The helicopter can be shot down by enemies as it attempts to escape however.
That's it, mission complete. However, the stream gave us a closer look at Mother Base customisation. You can build towers and custom structures in the base with money and resources. No two bases will appear the same.
POWs you have rescued will appear walking around the base, even taking time to thank and salute you. Also, there's the sheep, more prominent characters like Ocelot and more.
The player explained that it's possible to Fulton Recovery anti air guns, and even UAV drones like the one seen above to defend your base from other players, who can invade your HQ in multiplayer.
That's it, all over folks.
