The First Warden opts for a classic oversized sword and shield combo. During the first phase of the fight, you’ll want to get behind him to attack, as the shield will most likely prevent blows from making contact at the front. Avoid his slashing combo attack by rolling out of the way, or if you’re feeling particularly brave, block it. After throwing out a few combos, he’ll double down for heavy attack that you definitely want to be rolling out of the way for. Alternatively, get behind him to avoid it. Immediately after the heavy attack, his shield will be lowered, creating a perfect opportunity to mete out some real damage.

Once you’ve whittled his HP down to halfway, he’ll have had enough of playing silly buggers, will ditch his shield and employ a whirling attack that’s difficult to elude and will cause damage even when blocked. This is best dealt with by standing clear, waiting for him to come to a stop, then diving in for a beat down. He’ll fall back on his heavy attack again before long, so deal with that as before. Rinse and repeat until he’s good and dead, then grab your spoils in the form of the Persistence Greatsword and Big Unknown Rune.
