Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 antagonists include a rebel faction

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 has the titular heroine trying to save the denizens of a dying world - but not everybody is happy with Lightning's divine masters.

According to Siliconera's translation of an interview in Famitsu, the city of Luxerion - one of four major areas in the RPG - is home to a faction of rebels.

A god named Bhunivelze has nominated a Liberator to secure the souls of the world's inhabitants before the final days, but the revolutionaries are convinced they ought to kill off this heroic figure. To this end, they've committed a series of murders in Luxerion in the hopes of exposing the Liberator's identity - which is, of course, Lightning.

The interview also reveals that the game's world - Novus Partus - has been stagnant for 500 years. Although inhabitants are largely unaware of it - and quickly silenced if they gain some inkling - they've been living continuously for centuries, and no births have occurred. As such, the cast of the two previous Final Fantasy 13 games are alive and kicking and will appear throughout the story.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy is due on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sometime this year. Lightning will have 13 days to save the people of Novus Partus, with some events increasing or reducing her time limit, over a real-time day night cycle. It is designed for multiple playthroughs and boasts several endings.
