Legend of Grimrock 2 set on the Isle of Nex, will have new kinds of puzzles

Legend of Grimrock 2 will feature external environments, improved monster behaviour, and even more nefariously difficult puzzles.

Developer Almost Human gave new details on the first-person, turn-based dungeon crawler sequel in a new blog post.

Legend of Grimrock 2 will take place on the Isle of Nex, which Almost Human believes is the "perfect dungeon", because it allows for internal and external environments but maintains closed borders. Locations will include "dark woods, misty swamps, underground tunnels and ancient ruins". The four party members who find themselves on this island are their against their will, and will discover as they explore that they're not alone, and that the island holds more mysteries than they initially believed. There is no direct continuation of the plot of the first Grimrock game.

As for puzzles, Almost Human said it didn't want to give anything away by talking about specifics, but said that the player won't be "the only one stuck in the puzzles".

Responding to critical feedback of Grimrock 1, Almost Human has made changes to monster behaviour by writing all new AI. Monsters now use their superior numbers more cleverly, will call for help and utilise group tactics. Happily, stupid monsters will still be stupid.

The skill and item system have been overhauled with a perk-buy system designed to make character progress flexible and level ups meaningful. Items now boast secondary actions accessible only by characters with the appropriate skill. Spell casting and potion crafting has been simplified. Spells can be cast with mouse gestures, and mages won't be restricted to just one school of magic.

Finally, the sequel will have new spells, a new playable race, and a new character class. It currently boasts over 100 new items, 22 new monsters, new environments, a day-night cycle, and more.

Legend of Grimrock sold 17,000 in its first two months. A sequel was confirmed almost a full year ago, with first details emerging shortly thereafter.
