Metal Gear Survive is described as a new "addition to the Metal Gear Solid 5 universe", and is set in an alternate timeline following the conclusion of Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes - presumably one in which The Phantom Pain doesn't play out.

According to Konami's press release, Metal Gear Survive follows the adventures of soldiers previously employed at Metal Gear Solid 5's Mother Base, who must now work together in order to survive "massive threats".

The four-player action "takes a divergent look at familiar Metal Gear themes and pursues a fresh spirit of exploration in unique gameplay mechanics", according to a press release. There will be new weapons "to combat charging creatures and lethal environments".

These lethal environments include "distorted desert landscapes full of massive half-formed structures, living biological threats, and the remains of a once strong military force". This is the result of "unexplained wormholes forming in the sky" at the start of Metal Gear Survive, apparently.

Metal Gear Survive is coming to PC, PS4 and Xbox One in 2017. You can view the first trailer above, courtesy of IGN.
