Japanese charts - 3DS loses top hardware spot to PSP

Media Create has released the unit sales figures for Japanese hardware and software for the week ending March 27, and it finds PSP back on top and a new software title stealing the top spot from Dynasty Warriors 7.

Final Fantasy leads the way

Final Fantasy IV: Complete Collection debuted in the chart at number one, beating Dynasty Warriors 7 down into second after two weeks at the top. The Square-developed PSP title also helped the handheld usurp 3DS's throne - but more on that in a bit.

Dynasty Warriors 7 still came in second to FFIV's 104,173 units sold, moving 36,548 units. That's a 46 percent drop in sales over the week prior.

Gundam: The 3D Battle moved 23,500 units with its third place debut, pushing Dissidia 012 into fourth with 21,741 units moved, a 30 percent drop in sales.

Monster Hunter Freedom 3 moved back up the charts over the week prior to fifth place with an 11 percent sales increase, which caused Professor Layton to fall from the third place spot it's held for three weeks to sixth.

Debut titles for the week other than the aforementioned were Idea Factory's Gakuen Hetalia Portable (9,729 units) and Nippon Ichi's Classic Dungeon X2 (5,956 units), both on PSP.

PSP beats 3DS

3DS has led the Japanese hardware charts for the four weeks since it launched on February 26; however, thanks to the help of Final Fantasy IV Complete hitting stores, sales in PSP were up 27,568 units over the week prior with 50,479 folks purchasing the handheld.

PSPgo managed to move 16 more units over the week prior, and should 231 more folks purchased a PSP-3000, it would have tied 3DS for the top spot. When you look at combined SKUs, PSP edged out 3DS by 385 units.

PS2 moved an additional 224 units over last week.

3DS stayed in first place on the separate SKU chart with unit sales totaling 50,710. It should be noted, that if sales of the handheld continue in this pattern, by July it will have moved around 1,042,954 - providing it continues to sell around 50,000 a week, give or take a few hundred units.

Combined sales of other DS offerings were up over the prior week by 4,504 units. Wii sales were back up as well, moving 11,808 units compared to last week's 9,724 units.

Microsoft sold 1,963 Xbox 360's during the period (up 344 units). Last week, PS2 outsold the console by 19 units.
