You might not be thinking about Avatar 6 and 7, but James Cameron sure is

I'm sure that'll be nice for those of us still alive by the time they come out.

Despite the fact that only two films have been released so far, James Cameron has apparently planned all the way up to Avatar 7.

Avatar is 15 years old this year, having only released two films in that time frame, though the third film was filmed at the same time as the second, The Way of Water, so it shouldn't be too far off at the very least - it has a release date of December 19, 2025 in fact. Even some of Avatar 4 has already been shot to account for an apparent time skip, in order for the child actors to be the same age in the pre-time skip scenes. Past that point, a fifth film has also been confirmed to be in the works, and now, in a recent interview with People, Cameron has said that he even has plans for a sixth and seventh film.

"We're fully written through movie five, and I've got ideas for six and seven, although I'll probably be handing the baton on at that point," the acclaimed director told People at the 51st Saturn Awards over the weekend. "I mean, mortality catches up. But I mean, we're enjoying what we're doing. We're loving it. We get to work with great people." Avatar: The Way of Water and Cameron took home four awards at the ceremony, including for best science fiction film, and unsurprisingly for best film special/ visual effects.

He also spoke of his aspirations for the Avatar series to be up there with the likes of Star Wars and Star Trek, saying of them, "the world building franchises that have been around since I was a kid, those were my inspirations. And as I was saying out there, we're still a young universe. We're only two movies in, we're halfway through our third right now. To have that kind of cultural impact over time, you got to pour all your heart and energy into it."

While you wait the next couple of years for the threequel (and apparently the rest of your life for the next one), you could always play Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, which is actually quite good!
