Is Destiny's Last City located in Chile? Someone believes as much
A Reddit user has spent a bit of time to try and narrow down the location of Destiny's The Last City on Earth, where the The Tower is located.
Reddit user dwntwn_dine_ent_dist has a hypothesis about the real world location of The Last City on Earth, where Destiny's Tower is located. The user starts off by saying that a previous result suggesting the location to be Baffin Island, Canada, which relied on clues in the Director map and some of the images in the collector's edition, is not correct.
Dwntwn_dine_ent_dist's idea is based around the fact that shadows are always visible in The Tower. By drawing a simple table showing the times the sun rises and sets over The Tower, he deduced that this is either an equinox date, the city is located on the equator, or both.
And this is where it gets interesting. "Shadows of vertical objects cast on the level ground by the sun move counterclockwise," he notes.
"From this, it must be that the Tower (and the City) are in the southern hemisphere. This is consistent with the name "North Tower", which is roughly the northwest part of the Tower overall. (True north is roughly the direction you would walk from Rahool to Xander 99-40).
"On an equinox, an observer's latitude is 90 degrees minus the altitude of the sun at local noon. The screenshot shows a shadow cast by a tall object at noon, as viewed directly from the side. It shows a latitude of about 29°."
Going from the final point about the latitude degree, he concludes that it has to be located in South America, South Africa or Australia, but because of the visible mountains around The Tower, the location is probably Chile.
Of course this whole thing could be nullified if having shadows show up at all times was simply an artistic choice on Bungie's part. That's without even considering the notion that Earth's geography could be different to what it is now, since the game takes places thousands of years in the future.
