Intel pledges $300m to increase diversity in tech

Intel has said that it intends to spend $300 million to increase diversity in its business and the tech industry.

Speaking at CES, CEO Brian Krzanich confirmed the cash will be spent over five years to tackle the under representation of women and minorities, as well as increase the appeal of computer science studies.

"It's time to step up and do more. It's not good enough to say we value diversity," Krzanich said, reports USA Today.

"This isn't just good business. This is the right thing to do."

According to a report by The Verge, Krzanich alluded to issues amplified by Gamergate - a movement that has specifically targeted minorities and female members of the tech and games industries with hate speech and more.

Internally, Intel hopes to have a "full representation at all levels" of diversity in its own workforce by 2020. Compensation for its top execs will be based on the progress they make hitting diversity goals.

Intel became directly embroiled in the Gamergate controversy last year when it pulled ads from the trade website Gamasutra after an email campaign. It later reinstated advertising.
