If you’re excited about GTA 6, you better get used to GTA+
Some handheld classics are being added into the mix.
Rockstar appears to be laying the groundwork to get more people to subscribe to GTA+ ahead of GTA 6 as it adds in a couple more games for you to play.
For the most part, Rockstar's subscription service GTA+ is only really worth it if you play the online portion of GTA 5, as it adds a bunch of bonuses like cars and extra money each month. Up until now, subscribers have also been able to play the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition (maybe the worst title for a game ever?) on either Xbox or PlayStation. But last week, Rockstar announced that you can now play a couple other classic GTA titles if you're subscribed: Liberty City Stories and Chinatown Wars.
As long as you're currently subscribed to GTA+, you'll be able to play both titles on either the iOS App Store, or through the Google Play Store. Both will be a bit smaller in scale compared to the mainline GTA titles, after all, Liberty City Stories did release on the PSP, and Chinatown Wars was a Nintendo DS game - and one of the console's few 18 rated games. Those that aren't GTA+ members also have the opportunity to try a one-time, 30-minute-long demo too, before (of course) giving you the option to just buy them.
It should be noted that there is a slight caveat to the availability of these games, which is that they're not guaranteed to stick around forever. Rockstar notes that "GTA+ Members get access to download and play a rotating assortment of classic Rockstar Games titles for as long as they’re included in GTA+," which is a wild choice to make when you are quite literally the developer of these games, but what do I know?
Of course, for most people such a subscription service probably won't be worth it, but it is interesting to see how Rockstar is attempting to assign greater value to having a membership. It would be far from surprising to think that it might be an attempt to bring more people in before GTA 6 launches. After all, why make money just one time, when you can make money every month?
