If you thought Code Vein was just edgelord anime Dark Souls, this new footage will do nothing to convince you otherwise
Code Vein is never going to escape comparisons to its stablemate.
Now that From Software has officially moved on from Dark Souls and its family, publisher Bandai Namco has something new to satisfy that itch: Code Vein.
Deliberately marketed with references to Dark Souls, Code Vein hails from the team responsible for God Eater, a series which lurks in Monster Hunter's shadow, and really does look a lot like From Software's work. Not that there's anything wrong with that; although Lords of the Fallen and The Surge fell a bit flat, Nioh really proved there's room to do some interesting stuff in the same genre space as Dark Souls.
In any case, here's some new combat footage of Code Vein to ponder. It will likely be of most interest to the kind of Dark Souls fan who dives deep on the nitty gritties of interrupts, collision, hitboxes and i-frames, as there's plenty to unpack when you comb through it frame by frame.
If you happen to be that kind of expert, chime in and let us know what you think of Code Vein's combat. Does it live up to From Software's standards? Is it better than the first batch of unedited Code Vein combat footage?
For the rest of us, it all looks very much the same as last time, but in a different environment. It'd be nice to see some Code Vein combat with different enemies, wouldn't it?
Code Vein is coming to PC, PS4 and Xbox One sometime in 2018, so there's plenty of time for Bandai Namco to show a bit more variety.
