Hennig: Uncharted must "honour pulp adventure"
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception creative director Amy Hennig has said the series' script allows for ad-libbing from its cast, providing it stays true to the spirit of the adventure genre and doesn't turn into action blockbuster shenanigans.
"If somebody comes up with an idea that seems like it fits, and you see everybody sort of spark on that, that's meaningful," Hennig told Gamespot on the subject of the actors' improvisations.
"On the other hand, if somebody comes up with an idea that maybe would be awesome in another game, but everybody's kinda of like 'meh'… that's meaningful too."
The veteran developer said ad libbing works well as long as it fits in with the franchise's goals - honouring the history and traditions of the pulp adventure genre, and still telling "a story about believable characters who are flawed and charming and all the things that go along with that".
Hennig said only ides which prove supportive of those two goals make the cut.
"If the ideas are way too over the top, or they start making Drake seem like a superhero, or you know... that's a different genre," she said.
"The adventure genre is more about kind of groundedness, and there's a sort of retro aspect to it without making it old-fashioned and corny. We always have to check ourselves to make sure we're not making a kind of modern action movie."
Uncharted 3 is a PlayStation 3 exclusive, due in early November. See the full interview, which also features voice and mocap actors Nolan North and Richard McGonagle, below.
