Final Fantasy 7 Remake was announced during Sony’s press conference at E3 2015, after being rumored for an announcement earlier that morning.
The following December during the PlayStation Experience keynote, a new video was shown and later it was announced the game would be an episodic release, or a multi-part series as Square described it.
It will also expand the original game's story. Although the development team has yet to provide more information on that end, we do know the studio wants to delve deeper into characters Biggs, Wedge and Jessie.
The game is in development using Unreal Engine 4 instead of the Luminous Engine and it will feature fully-voiced characters.
Earlier this month, director Tetsuya Nomura said production on Final Fantasy 7 Remake was steadily progressing but its release is still rather far off.
