Harmonix announces Super Beat Sports, a musical sports game for Switch with shades of Rhythm Heaven
The masters of music games are bringing their next game to the Switch.
Super Beat Sports is a compilation of five different sports, re-imagined as rhythm games. You and up to three other players need to match your actions across each sport to the music in order to succeed. It's a follow up to their Apple TV game, Beat Sports,
The announcement trailer shows off the art style and gives you an idea of the vibe and music of the game (in fact I've played it a few times through while writing this piece because the music is quite ear-wormy), but the gameplay trailer (below) is more indicative of how the game will actually play.
There are five sports shown here. Buddy Ball, Whacky Bat, and Gobble Golf all look like they're based around swinging motions, while Rhythm Racket looks like a competitive rhythmic version of Pong, and Net Ball is, somewhat misleadingly, actually volleyball.
Fans of Nintendo's Rhythm Heaven franchise will likely feel that this all looks pretty familiar. Like that series, the priority here seems to be on timing movements to a beat, presumably using the motion controls of the Joy Con controllers (according to the game's website you will be able to use the Pro Controller as well).
The game is due for release in 'fall' - so within the next three months - exclusively on the Switch.
