Halo Wars 2: Awakening the Nightmare expansion introduces a new game mode and campaign

Halo Wars 2 expansion dated for September release.

Halo Wars 2 made its debut back in February and if you were quick about it, you might have taken advantage of the $50 discount on the 1TB Xbox One S Halo Wars 2 bundle. The bundle is still available on the Microsoft Store but it's back to its usual $350.

If you picked up the game and are ready for some new content, you're in luck.

A new expansion was announced at Gamescom this week. Halo Wars 2: Awakening the Nightmare launches on September 26, and as well as a new campaign, it introduces a new game mode called Terminus Firefight.

"The expansion takes place just a few months after the end of the events in Halo Wars 2, where the war for control of the Ark continues to rage on," explains Xbox Wire.

"The Banished, in their efforts to do anything to regain the upper hand against Captain Cutter and the brave troops on board the UNSC Spirit of Fire, find out their willingness to risk it all can have serious consequences – and those consequences take shape in the form of the Flood!"

You can take a gander at the trailer below.

Another new feature that isn't live just yet, is the upcoming Spectator Mode and Arena, so you can watch other players in action online and compete for yourself in Xbox Live tournaments.

More details on the expansion have been teased for later this week, so we'll keep you updated.
