GTA Online: How to Complete the Treasure Hunt and Get the Gold Double Action Revolver
We show you how exploring Los Santos can get you big rewards in the Wild West.
With the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar went back to their previous game and added a new treasure hunt mission, allowing the players to explore GTA Online to earn themselves prizes in both games, including an exclusive weapon variant. We'll show you where to find this treasure and what you can expect.
How to Unlock the Double Action Revolver
The treasure hunt quest can only be done once, and it should be pretty clear when it's beginning. You'll receive a mysterious email in your phone from vanderlinde@eyefind.com, showing a black and white photograph and the words "Use the photograph in this email to identify the location of the treasure." There's no name attached, but I guess Dutch is sending us on fetch quests from beyond the grave…? Whatever the case, simply opening the email and checking the picture should start this little side mission. Remember however that if at any point you quit the game, you'll have to restart it from the beginning.
Following the Photo in the Email
Each player is liable to get a different photograph, with twenty distinct locations for the treasure to be in. However, there are two elements in the player's favour: firstly that the game gives you a rough map location to search in, narrowing it down immensely, and secondly that what you're looking for - a white sheet of paper - is not that hard to find, usually displayed with some prominence and certainly not hidden.
Remember that the photo is not taken from the perspective of the treasure, meaning that you'll be searching the area in the photo, not looking for where the person took the photograph from. Scout around and look for the telltale white glimmer of paper, usually hanging somewhere rather than on the floor.
Finding the Note
The paper you do find tells a sorry tale, that the mysterious treasure turned the owners against each and somebody decided to hide it in a different spot. However, reading the paper highlights three fixed points across the world map, all holding clues that will lead you to the treasure's location.
The Three Clues
There are three objects to be found that will reveal the treasure's whereabouts: a box where the treasure was previously stored, a corpse of a former owner, and the shovel used to kill them. They don't need to found in any order, so take them however you want. Here's where they are:
Finding the Box
The box is the most Northerly clue, the highlighted area showing a section of road among farmland in Grapeseed. Look under a large tree with broken bark on the Western side of the road, and you should see an open box with an indentation for a revolver. Walk up to it and press right on the D-Pad to investigate, marking off the first clue.
Finding the Shovel
The shovel is in the wrecked skeleton of a house on the beach of Sandy Shores, next to the "Alamo Sea" lake. Walk up to the destroyed house to see a rather comfortable-looking green armchair - the shovel, caked with blood, is lying next to that. Walk up to it and press right on the D-Pad to investigate, marking off the second clue.
Finding the Corpse
The body is in Tongva Hills, on the Western side of the map. There's a cliff in the highlighted area, with a cave partially concealed by shrubbery. Find the cave and you should see the body lying inside, wearing only boots and underwear. Walk up to it and press right on the D-Pad to investigate, marking off the last clue and revealing the location of the treasure on the map.
Claiming the Treasure
Don't worry about greedy family members - arriving at the caravan marked on the map reveals that they all killed each other before you got there, leaving that juicy treasure to be claimed in a wooden box at the head of the caravan. Walk up to it and press right on the D-Pad one final time to claim your reward: a golden double-action revolver. It also unlocks a new challenge for an even bigger reward.
How to Beat The Double-Action Revolver Challenge
Once you claim the revolver, the challenge immediately appears: get 50 headshots with that revolver and you'll get $250,000 for GTA Online and the exclusive golden variant of the gun in Red Dead Redemption 2, assuming both games are linked to the same Rockstar Social account. It's a pretty hefty reward for a challenge that's not too difficult, so we recommend doing gang fights and heists with a lot of combat involved. Alternatively, invite a friend to play with you and take turns blowing each other's heads off. Before long you'll both have a quarter of a million dollars for your suffering.
