GREE: mobile devs making 4x what they did 12 months ago
GREE knows mobile. After all it makes a lot of money in the sector worldwide, and SVP of studio operations Anil Dharni has stated that the company isn't the only one reaping the rewards of the sector. He has stated in an interview that top mobile studios are raking in four times as much as it did this time last year.
Speaking with TechCrunch, Dharni that Apple's visible marketing attempts surrounding iPad are just one contributing factor into the rising profitability of the mobile industry, and added, "It's 4X and beyond in terms of revenue [compared to a year ago]."
Dharni added that low operating and production costs can mean big rewards for studios like SuperCell, which GI.biz reports can make anywhere up to $500,000 in a day. Although he cited iPad as a driver of this success, Dharni cautioned that Android would close the gap on Apple this year.
GREE's new strategy will see it offering updated, almost weekly content to keep gamers coming back to its titles for more. Dharni elaborated based on experience at his own company Funzio, which is now owned by GREE, "While [Funzio] had been running live games, we weren't running them at the depth at GREE was.
"What that means is creating new fun and engaging content on a daily or weekly basis. You want your players coming back every week to check what's new. We conceptually understood this, but didn't see the extent to which it improves our metrics."
