The Google Stadia controller's biggest feature won't be there at launch

You won't be able to seamlessly move your Stadia controller between devices at launch.

From the moment Google Stadia was first revealed, one of its biggest features has been the wireless controller.

The controller, Google explained, connects directly to the data centre through Wi-Fi, enabling the player to switch screens and continue playing with no interruptions. Google even demoed the feature on stage at the reveal event, but the company has now confirmed that it won't actually be there at launch.

While you will be able to pick up where you left off on any platform where Stadia is accessible, the controller will need to be plugged into any device that isn't Chromecast Ultra.

It's going to work as advertised on Chromecast Ultra, but switching to a PC or a phone/tablet will require a USB-C connection at launch. This detail was actually mentioned (in fine print) in Stadia's release date trailer, but only just been picked up on by 9to5Google.

A Google community manager confirmed it on Reddit, and later to The Verge, saying that the company wanted to get the TV experience right first.

Although the controller technically supports Bluetooth, that too won't be available at launch. It's not clear when either will be available to consumers.

Stadia Pro launches November 19.
