Gears 5 to receive major content updates every 3 months
Gears 5 developer The Coalition has revealed ambitious plans for post-launch support.
Gears 5 is introducing the concept of Operations, with a new Operation dropping every three months. Each Operation launches as part of a big free update, which includes new modes, maps and characters.
All content in Operations will be free for all players, though some things - such as characters - will be available for direct-purchase, though can also be earned through play. Operations tie into Gears 5's Tour of Duty, whose content will be refreshed with the launch of every new Operation.
As previously revealed, Tour of Duty is battle pass-like system that provides a steady stream of content to players for free. All of the Tour of Duty's content is strictly cosmetic, ranging from blood sprays to weapon and character skins.
Outside of the new content, the quarterly updates will bring new features, fixes and more to the game. This also includes new tile sets for the game's map builder.
Gears 5's first Operation kicks off with the launch of the game and goes on until December. The good news is that Operations, and by extension Tour of Duty, take into account Versus, Escape and Horde progression, which should leave players who tend to avoid Gears' PvP modes satisfied.
Gears 5 unlocks tomorrow for Ultimate Edition owners, and on September 10 for everyone else on PC and Xbox One. If you're on the fence, give our Gears 5 reviews round-up a read.
