Games Now! The best iPhone and iPad games for Friday, September 18th

Pretty quiet week this week what with iOS 9 coming out on Wednesday. Here are the best games for your iPhone and iPad this week along with a classic you may have missed.

pixwing

The best PAID iOS games this week

PixWing: $2.99 (iPad, iPhone)

PixWing is a pixelated flying game with ‘unique whole-body controls’. No really. They work! You pilot planes around various environments by moving your entire body as you play. The iThing’s gyroscope is used for control and your device will even count the calories you burn along the way.
It has regular touch-screen controls too. Phew.

Rock(s) Rider - HD Edition: $2.99 (iPad, iPhone)

Rock Rider is a stunning looking Trials type game for mobile. There’s a fair few of these already on mobile of course, but where this one stands out is in it’s execution. Everything looks and works very well indeed. There’s plenty of courses, good controls, online leaderboards, and wall smashing difficulty. Worth a look if you fancy some Trials on the go.

Drunk-Fu: Wasted Masters: $1.99 (iPad, iPhone)

Drunk Fu is a physics-based drunk fighting simulator. Need to hear any more before buying? I didn’t. Gameplay involves picking a character and staggering around trying to hit other characters. There’s weapons to pick up and you can upgrade your character. There’s even multiplayer. Some genuinely funny physics-based madness. Did you spill my pint?!

The best FREE iOS games this week

Drive Ahead! (iPad, iPhone)

Drive Ahead! is a two player vehicular combat game with a slapstick twist. Each player controls a vehicle in a shared screen arena with the aim being to hit your opponent’s head with your car to score. The first to five points wins. There’s a wealth of different cars, weapons, and arenas to unlock. Death comes in many many hilarious ways to the hapless drivers. Great multiplayer fun.

MiniGolf Endless MMO (iPad, iPhone)

MiniGolf Endless MMO is a pleasant game of overhead, retro themed, golf on a never ending golf course. Controls don’t get any more complicated than aiming and hitting. The presentation is somewhere between the iOS hit Desert Golfing and a Gameboy Mario Golf game from the 90s. There’s even online ‘mingle player’ where you see opponent’s ghosts on the course.

Happy Wheels (iPad, iPhone)

Happy Wheels doesn’t look particularly good. However it’s an absolute blast to play. Happy Wheels is a side scrolling, physics based, obstacle course. You start by driving a Segway and graduate to other types of personal transporters. Crashes and accidents are violently over the top in a Super Meat Boy way and it gets quite challenging later on.

This week’s golden oldie that’s still fantastic

Retro Racing: $1.99 (iPad, iPhone)

Over three years later Retro Racing is still the very best overhead car racing game available on mobile. Created by the developer behind some classic racers, Retro Racing is the perfect mobile treatment of the genre. The controls are spot on, the graphics are suitably retro and move at a silky 60fps, there’s plenty of content and challenge, and even an excellent two player split-screen mode. If you haven’t played this one you really should. (Also available on PC and Mac)
