The best PAID iOS games this week

Downwell: $2.99 (iPad, iPhone)

Downwell is a fantastic platform shooter with on-screen controls that work. Yep. Every game of Downwell starts at the top of a well. You plunge down the procedurally-generated hole, falling from platform to platform, in attempt to get further than your last attempt. The wells are packed with gems to collect, guns to upgrade, and hidden skins to unlock. Downwell looks, and sounds, just as good as it plays.

Super Sharp: $1.99 (iPad, iPhone)

Super Sharp is a physics puzzler. No, wait! Come back. It's a well-executed minimal physics puzzler that feels right at home on a mobile device. Each level involves cutting large shapes into smaller chunks so the chunks touch a goal. What sets Super Sharp apart is the level design. The puzzles start clever and, as the difficulty ramps, get downright ingenious.

Cloud Chasers - A Journey of Hope: $3.99 (iPad, iPhone)

Cloud Chasers is a story about immigration. You guide a father and daughter on their journey to a new life. It has five randomly generated steampunk worlds to explore. Travel happens via a fun cloud glider, there’s inventories to manage, some trading, and plenty more to discover along the way.

The best FREE iOS games this week

Pink Heaven (iPad, iPhone)

There's an excellent iOS platformer called Kero Blaster that’s among the best examples of the genre on mobile. Kero Blaster is rock hard. Pink Heaven, from the same developer, shares the same look and controls as Kero Blaster but is more forgiving. Despite being a much easier game, Pink Heaven is still a very high quality iOS platformer. Unmissable.

Kubiko: (iPad, iPhone)

Imagine a Rubik’s Cube that’s not a cube but instead is a chunky 3D animal shape. That’s Kubiko. There’s 40 puzzles, from five themed packs, to solve. Each puzzle is solved by twisting and rotating the pile of voxels until the target shape is reached. There’s a wide variety of shapes with people, monsters, cars, and more. Worth a fiddle.

Dash Quest (iPad, iPhone)

Dash Quest is a retro-looking fantasy action meets endless runner with RPG elements. Gameplay involves hacking and slashing your way through vertically scrolling quests. The controls are simple and well implemented (tap the right to attack, tap the left to block, hold to release a special attack). There’s quests to unlock, gear to upgrade, and bosses to defeat. Great fun.

This week’s golden oldie (that’s still fantastic)

Chillaxian: $1.99 (iPad, iPhone)

Chillaxian, an early 80s style arcade shooter, is one of those games that should really be pre-installed on all iThings. It is, as you might have guessed, heavily inspired by Galaxian. Gameplay is just what you’d expect - aliens attack from the top in waves while your ship dodges and shoots form the bottom. There’s new bosses every five waves and asteroid fields even make an appearance. More than just a classic remade for mobile. Much more.
