The best PAID iOS games this week

The Room Three - $4.99 (iPad, iPhone)

Guess what? This is a sequel to the award-winning The Room One and The Room Two. This sequel is packed with the beautiful, high quality, tactile puzzles the series is known for. If you haven’t played a Room game then you really should. It’s an exceptional series of puzzlers that feels right at home on mobile.

Minecraft: Story Mode - $4.99 (iPad, iPhone)

Minecraft: Story Mode is a five part episodic story that takes place in the Minecraft universe. Telltale Games, the maker of The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones adventures, is at the helm here and it shows. The player guides a party of adventurers across the Minecraft universe in search of the mysterious Order of the Stone. My 8 year-old resident Minecraft fan loved it.

Agent: A: A puzzle in disguise - $2.99 (iPad, iPhone)

Agent: A: A puzzle in disguise is a point-and-click puzzle adventure. The gameplay is reminiscent of retro classics like Day of the Tentacle and Blade Runner and involves following clues to find the elusive Ruby La Rouge. The mobile adaptation of the traditional point-and-click interface is excellent and the game has consistently high production values. Well worth your points and your clicks this week.

The best FREE iOS games this week

Coors Light Super Refresh-Men (iPad, iPhone)

OK! This sounds pretty terrible - a retro brawler brought to you by a beer company. But it’s not. Coors Light Super Refresh-Men is a superb retro fighter brought to you for free because it IS sponsored by a beer company. Chose one of four playable characters and scrap your way through the Rockies on your journey to save the world from eternal thirst (or something).
It’s bloody good, Double Dragon-esque brawling fun.

Mavenfall: (iPad, iPhone)

Mavenfall is a player-versus-player game of tactical card-driven combat. Gameplay involves choosing and customizing a selection of Mavens and RPG battling against opponents in online play. Each Maven has a unique deck of cards which gives them access to spells and powers entirely of their own. This makes for strategic and rewarding play. Worth a shuffle.

Super Boys - The Big Fight (iPad, iPhone)

Super Boys - The Big Fight is a chaotic brawler that takes place in an ultra violent TV show where heroes and bosses face off. Gameplay is suitably frantic, the on-screen controls work well and there’s a good deal of content available for free. Worth a bash.

This week’s golden oldie (that’s still fantastic)

Super Hexagon - $2.99 (iPad, iPhone)

When Super Hexagon arrived in 2012 EDGE magazine gave it a rare 9/10 and called it, “A masterpiece of design purity”. Super Hexagon hasn’t aged at all and I still rate it as one of the very best action games ever created. Gameplay involves rotating the screen clockwise or counterclockwise to guide the player triangle through a maze of hexagons and other shapes. Super Hexagon sets out to do one thing and it does so exquisitely well. Essential.
