Gamers have helped raise $1 million for charity
In just 19 months, the Humble Store has helped raise $1 million for several worth causes.
The indie-friendly Humble Store donates 10% of the cover price of games sold through its alternative digital distributor to five charities.
According to the Humble Mumble blog, this little slice has garnered over $1 million since the scheme launched in November 2013.
That money has been channelled to::
- Disaster relief via the American Red Cross
- Providing games to sick children in hospitals through Child’s Play
- Fighting for digital rights alongside the Electronic Frontier Foundation
- Conservation of threatened habitats and wildlife with the World Land Trust
- Access to clean water in developing nations through charity: water
Since the price on the Humble Store are not noticeably higher than other storefronts, the charitable contribution is probably coming out of a cut that would normally be pocketed by the distributor, publisher and developer as extra profit. Still, by buying from among Humble's 500 strong catalogue rather than other outlets, you're directly enabling that success, and encouraging participating organisations to continue. Well done you!
