Gameloft on cloning accusations: The gaming industry has "maybe one new idea a year"

Gameloft's been a driving force in the mobile gaming sphere for years now, pumping out such hits as Hal... er, NOVA, Uncharte... er, Shadow Guardian, and Modern Warfare. Or Combat. Or something.

Turns out, people notice when you constantly crib notes from the rest of the class. So, Gameloft, what say you?

"The video game industry has always played around a limited number of themes. There is maybe one new idea a year," Gameloft CEO Michel Guillemot told IGN.

He then went on to cite examples like Grand Theft Auto and God of War, both of which made pool-emptying splashes that were followed by an inevitable wave of clones.

"If a type of game is not available, then you should make it. The damaging thing is if you do a bad expression of a good idea," he added.
