Game retailers would like to see releases spread out more over the year

HMV CEO Simon Fox would like to see more game released outside of the Q4 holiday period.

Speaking with MCV, Fox said it would help the market if publishers would spread releases out and release some larger titles in the summer when there's usually a lull.

"We would love to see some blockbusters available earlier in the year, there is no question about that whatsoever," he said. "It would be fantastic to have some summer releases when there is a real appetite from the customer to buy games. Huge blockbuster games so close together becomes unaffordable."

Blockbuster director Gerry Butler agreed, telling MCV the game industry should take a page out of Hollywood's book when it comes to releases.

"The movie industry would never bring the top 20 franchises together in Q4 and have nothing else for the entire year," he said. "There's not a lot of triple-A games coming out in June. The movie industry just doesn't do that.

"I'd like to see the publishers spread the titles out more evenly. That is better for them. And I do think over the next two to three years that will actually happen."

Gamers have lamented the mid-year lull in releases for years. Perhaps it's past high-time publishers took note of this.
