Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers won't release on Linux [Update]
Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers 20th Anniversary Edition will not be releasing on Linux, despite rumours to the contrary.
Update: Pinkerton Road reached out to VG247 to offer clarification on this matter. As noted in our original article, word of the Linux port came from an external source, not Pinkerton Road or Activision, and the developer has now clarified that a Linux port was never on the cards.
"We never said MGX would be released on Linux only that Moebius would be," Gabriel Knight creator Jane Jensen wrote in an update to the Pinkerton Road forums, using the codename for Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers 20th Anniversary Edition. "There were no promises broken or blocked by either Pinkerton Road or Activision.
"We are thrilled to have gotten the license to release GK1 on PC, Mac, Apple mobile and Android. There is no anti-Linux conspiracy. We are also not releasing on console either, for example. It was simply a matter of 'these platforms make the most sense in the market right now, let's release there and see how it goes'. We may be granted permission to do more platforms later, but that depends on how well the game turns out and how it sells."
"I know those of you who are passionate about Linux are disappointed, but there is nothing to be upset at Activision about."
Phoenix Online's Wheldon Hathaway, the source of the original confusion, has apologised for the mix up.
"I had just assumed that we would be doing all the same platforms that we were doing with Moebius. I wasn't aware that was not actually accurate until a couple of weeks ago so the misinformation from the announcement thread is 100% my fault for making a bad assumption and I am sorry for that," he wrote.
Original story: Although Linux was not included in the original announcement, Pinkerton Road partner Phoenix Online Studios had told fans they could expect a port. Unfortunately, it's had to retract this promise.
"My previous statement that GK would be available on Linux turns out to be incorrect. I can't even begin to imagine why, but Activision isn't allowing the game to be made for that platform. Just PC, Mac, Android, and iOS devices," Phoenix Online chief technical officer Wheldon Hathaway wrote on the Pinkerton Road forums.
Activision's history of supporting Linux is distinguished only by its total lack of existence.
Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers 20th Anniversary Edition is in the works at Pinkerton Road, the independent, crowd-funded team founded by Gabriel Knight creator Jane Jensen. Pinkerton is also responsible for Moebius, which Phoenix Online is doing the hard yards on.
