Update: Turn 10 Studios and Microsoft are reportedly looking into the problem, according to a statement from a Microsoft representative.
"We are aware that certain players are experiencing issues pre-downloading “Forza Motorsport 7” on Windows 10 PCs. We’re actively working with the Windows Store team to investigate and resolve as quickly as possible," says the developer in its statement.
Two days ago, the pre-load for Forza Motorsport 7 went live on Xbox One and Windows 10, allowing fans to download the game ahead of launch. That's a good thing, as the game is nearly 100GB on Windows 10 due to 4K assets, while the Xbox One version comes in at 67GB. Unfortunately, there seem to be problems dealing with the game on Windows 10.
Numerous folks who have tried to pre-load Forza Motorsport 7 on the Windows Store have found themselves ending in failure. The biggest issue is that the pre-load can error out, and when it does, the download starts again at the very beginning, instead of where it stopped. Yeah, even if you've downloaded 65GB of the game, you can find yourself back at the beginning.
This is huge problem, especially with users who may have download data caps at their internet service providers. Others simply have slow download speeds, meaning every hour counts. Regardless, multiple threads on the official Forza forums and the Forza subreddit have folks who ran into the problem.
"The only way I was able to get past 58.58 MB was to update Windows itself. Once that was done, I managed to get just under 60GB before it failed. Good thing my cap was raised to 1TB, though that's still around 5% of my internet allowance flushed down the toilet," wrote Forza forum member German Ogre.
"Same thing here, I have almost burned through my quota for the month after a few failed attempts," wrote Forza forum member Merv0102.
"It's infuriating. It would take 40+ hours and use almost half my monthly data if it went perfectly, but it's failed twice so far. Not sure if I will even be ready for launch and I can't use the ~50gb of 4k textures anyway. Maybe should have got Project CARS instead," said Reddit user Bhwin.
One user posted their discussion with a Microsoft representative who pointed to "unforeseen network congestion" as the problem and promised that the issue was being worked on. The ongoing problem here is how the Windows Store handles downloads, which is something that they should have down by now.
As an illustration, some have turned to download fixes that were previously used for Forza Horizon 3 and Gears of War 4. People have tried uninstalling all related content, logging out of the Windows Store, and logging back in to restart the download. A Microsoft representative previously pointed to resetting the Windows Store app as well. One user offered this lengthy series of instructions to download Forza Horizon 3 as a fix for their problems with Forza Motorsport 7. (We at USgamer do not vouch for any of these methods.)
As of this writing, Microsoft and Turn 10 have yet to make an official comment on the matter. We've reached out to Microsoft for a statement and will update when we receive it.
