Fortnite update boosts PC performance
Epic is trying to support players with lower spec hardware.
Developer Epic Games has just made some tweaks to make Fortnite run better on older PCs.
In a post on its website, the studio announced a new optional Performance Mode that makes the battle royale title run better on lower-spec hardware. In return for Fortnite running at a better click, users give up visual quality in order to lighten the CPU and GPU demands.
To activate it, you'll need to opt-in. To do this, head to the Epic Games Launcher and click on the three dots next to Fortnite in the Library. From there, click on Options and you'll be given the option to uninstall High Resolution Textures, saving you 14GB in storage and bringing the total size of Fortnite on your hard drive to just 17GB.
Epic also recommends that those playing Fortnite on older hardware use an SSD or have at least 6GB of RAM for a smoother experience.
This was rolled out in Alpha yesterday (Tuesday, December 15).
"Performance mode is made possible by lowering in-game visual quality to increase framerate and is a great way for users to hop in and experience the game as long as they meet the Fortnite system requirements," Epic wrote.
"Along with the option to uninstall high-resolution textures, players can now get in quicker than ever before and still enjoy the game as intended."
This is just the latest tweak that Epic has made to Fortnite. On the other end of the scale, the company has been supporting PC gamers who have high-end rigs capable of raytracing as of September.
While we expect to see games firms supporting the latest and greatest technology on offer, it's still nice to see that Epic wants to make Fortnite a worthwhile experience on lower-end tech, too.
Meanwhile, the developer recently announced a brand new monthly subscription service called Fortnite Crew, which released alongside Chapter 2 Season 5 at the start of December.
That followed the blockbuster finale of Chapter 2 Season 4, which saw a record 15.3 million concurrent players gather in-game to fight Marvel baddy Galactus.
