Fortnite: how to advance through the Arena Divisions and take part in the World Cup Online Opens

The Fortnite World Cup event has started, so let's take a look at how you can get involved.

There are loads of events happening throughout Season 8 and beyond in Fortnite, including the Arena Game Mode and the Fortnite World Cup Online Opens.

The Arena Mode is a permanent Solo and Duos competitive game mode. Everyone begins in Division One and can rank up to Division Seven, the Champion League. You earn Hype based on the number of eliminations you get and where you place in a match.

The Arena is split into three leagues: the Open, Contender and Champion League. The higher the Division, the more Hype it will cost to enter a match.

Both Solo and Duo players can earn between one and three Hype points by completing certain criteria. Points are awarded as follows:

  • Victory Royale: 3 Hype
  • Reach top five: 2 Hype
  • Reach top 15: 2 Hype
  • Reach top 25: 3 Hype
  • Each Elimination: 1 Hype

Players in Division One to Three won't need to pay any bus fare. Division Four and Five cost 1 Hype, Division Six costs 2 Hype and Divison Seven costs 3 Hype.

Matchmaking is based on a player's Hype points and which Division they are in, making it an equal playing field. Those who reach the Champion League are eligible to take part in the Fortnite World Cup Online Opens.

Fortnite World Cup

The Fortnite World Cup Online tournaments begin on April 13 and will run every week for ten weeks across each region. The semi-finals session takes place on a Saturday and is three hours long, with a 10 match limit. If you place in the top 3000 players, you'll be able to take part in the final on Sunday.

You can only take part in one server region each week, so you won't be able to enter several times across different servers. Solo players will play on odd weeks and Duos on even weeks throughout the Online Opens.

During the Online Opens, both Solo and Duos players will earn points based on the following scoring system:

Solo

  • Victory Royale: 10 Points
  • 2nd - 5th: 7 Points
  • 6th - 15th: 5 Points
  • 16th - 25th: 3 Points
  • Each Elimination: 1 Point

Duos

  • Victory Royale: 10 Points
  • 2nd - 3rd: 7 Points
  • 4th - 7th: 5 Points
  • 8th - 12th: 3 Points
  • Each Elimination: 1 Point

The top 1500 players will receive cash prizes from a $1 million prize pool, and the highest ranked players from each server region will advance to the World Cup Finals in New York in July. It will be a three day final and players will be competing for their share of a $30 million prize pool.

Finalists will be guaranteed at least $50,000 and the World Cup Solo Champion will get roughly $3 million. More details can be round in the rules here.

Around 100 Solo players and 50 Duos will be invited to take part in the World Cup Finals, which will run from July 26 - 28 and will be streamed for fans.
