Firmware 2.40: Changing in-game sound output not supported despite Sony promise

One of the more positive things mentioned in our Firmware 2.40 article yesterday was that the update allows users to switch audio output from stereo to 5.1 without having to quit games. Why were happy? From the Fimware 2.40 FAQ:
Will it be possible to change in-game the sound output?
Yes, sound output changes are supported.
Why are we angry now? Because it isn't true. You can't. We've tried and the XMB tells us that in order to edit this feature we need to quit the game.
