Final Fantasy 14 has over 22 million registered players

Square Enix has announced that its superstar MMO, Final Fantasy 14, has attracted over 22 million registered users worldwide over the course of its lifetime.

That's a pretty impressive number, but it should be noted that includes anyone that's signed up for the game's free trial – it doesn't necessarily mean that 22 million people have purchased the full game.

Still, it proves that the title has an impressive draw for new players, and that eight years on from Final Fantasy 14's relaunch in 2013, it's still a massive success for Square Enix (thanks Dengeki and Siliconera).

It stands to reason that the player count could go up in the coming days and weeks, too: we already know that Final Fantasy 14 goes into open beta on PS5 later this month, with the developer rolling out a test version of the game to Sony's newest console on April 13.

That will likely tempt a whole new roster of players to the game in itself thanks to the promise of faster loading times, increased frame rates, true 4K resolution, 3D audio, and haptic feedback.

Then, in the future, there's the question of whether or not the game will appear on Xbox platforms. Apparently, there are “no obstacles” preventing Final Fantasy 14 from coming to Xbox except development resources. That bodes well for the game arriving on Xbox at some point, no?

Phil Spencer has helped relax certain policies to allow the game to arrive on Xbox in the past few years, so – in theory – there's nothing stopping the game from appearing on Microsoft hardware at some point.

The game's next big update, Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker, comes to PC, PS4 and PS5 this fall.
