Here we are. The weekend. Not just any weekend, though. We've reached the King of Weekends: The Memorial Day weekend. It's he unofficial start of summer, approximately three weeks before the real start of summer.
Hey, summer's awesome. Nothing wrong with starting it early.
If you live outside of the United States, happy Substitute Reason for the Long Weekend. And if you live in Canada, you blew your long weekend wad on Victoria Day already. Sorry.
It's been an interesting week. We have a lot of new information (and controversy) about the next Far Cry game, and Magikarp Jump splashed out of nowhere and straight into our hearts.
Here's the wrap-up:
- Far Cry 5 is coming in February 2018, and it's about defending American values from an extremist religious cult. Some people think the game stands to be controversial, but Mike points out why that's probably not the case.
- Magikarp Jump is a Pokémon game for mobile that's all about raising Magikarp and training them to ... jump. It's kind of great. Caty believes it has some dark themes below its surface. I, on the other hand, think it's kind of sweet. Ah, the duality of Pokémon.
- Azure Striker Gunvolt 1 and 2 are coming to Nintendo Switch. Gunvolt and his motley crew may even have a chance at redeeming Beck of Mighty No. 9 "fame" with the upcoming Mighty Gunvolt Burst.
- We've got game movie news. Hope that sentence didn't cause your bowels to knot up in dread. the Resident Evil movies are getting a reboot, and Tom Holland is playing Nathan Drake in the Uncharted movie.
- Ain't no Red Dead Redemption 2 'til 2018, Pilgrim. Really, that's not a bad thing at all.
- Overwatch is a year old. Here's what's in your loot bag:Skin! Skin! Well, Overwatch always was about being fashionable. And delightfully nerdy. And problematic. And still lacking in cross-platform play. Sheesh. What a party.
- More info leaked about Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. At least Princess Peach is confirmed for "Badass Princess," for whatever that's worth.
- Ultra Street Fighter II for the Switch isn't a very good buy. It caused me to wonder what Capcom is up to on the Switch. Capcom promptly said, "We're giving it Monster Hunter XX, Nadia. Duh. You stupid idiot."
- Former Pope of USgamer Jeremy Parish gave us a lot of great contributions this week. He interviewed Over Fence about the upcoming Mekuru for Switch, talked to Game Freak about Giga Wrecker, and chatted with Hexadrive. All that, and he still managed to offer us another Design in Action column about Shovel Knight.
All right. Off you go. Eat and drink 'til you puke.
Not before you listen to this week's choice of ending credits music, though. It's a good one: The credits roll for Donkey Kong Country 2. What can I say; I felt inspired after highlighting Mining Melancholy in Starting Screen a week ago.
I need to point out that the change in Donkey Kong Country 2's credits roll (0:46) isn't dissimilar from the change in Aerosmith's Janie's Got a Gun (2:17).
Was Rare composer David Wise inspired by Aerosmith's gritty ballad? I hope so.
