The world of Fallout 76 is a dangerous place. There’s other players, vicious robots and even a new hyper-intelligent race of ghouls to contend with. Here’s how to make sure you stay alive.

Fallout 76 is the very first online-only Fallout game and as such, saving works a little differently to how it does previously. Seeing as you are logging onto a server each time you play, you don’t really have control over your game data. Problem is, it can be very confusing working out when the game actually saves, and how to trigger it when you want. In this Fallout 76 Saving Guide, we’ll collect all the info we’ve found on saving in Fallout 76. We’ll take a look at how to save, and also whether or not you can access your game data.

How to Save in Fallout 76

So now that you know that you can’t save your game manually, how the heck do you save your game in Fallout 76. Well, it seems that Fallout 76 relies on a checkpointing system to trigger a save. Actions like completing quests, entering new areas and fast travelling will all save your game. The easiest way to save in Fallout 76 when you want is definitely to fast travel back to your Camp, though exiting via the menu will also ensure your data is saved. You will lose data if you simply pull the plug on your session, or if you just power off your device without closing the game down properly.

Can You Manually Save in Fallout 76?

Fallout 76 is an online-only game, and is therefore server based. Rather than your save game being stored on your console or PC, it is actually collected and stored by Bethesda using cloud technology. As such, there is no way to manually save your game in Fallout 76, and you’ll have to rely on the autosave feature that the game uses.

You May Load Back Into Fallout 76 in a Different Location

Even if you’ve used one of the methods described previously in this article, you might not load back into Fallout 76 exactly where you left off. We’ve experienced multiple instances where we’ve loaded into a game just outside a city we’re in, or a short walk from the Camp we left off at. You will have all of the items received before the save though, so the majority of your progress will have been preserved.
