Fallout 4 stuttering issues can be improved with faster hard drives
Fallout 4's stuttering issues on Xbox One can be mitigated with faster hard drives, but at what cost.
Having given an early appraisal of the console versions of Fallout 4 recently, Digital Foundry has today followed up on that article to try and isolate Xbox One's stuttering issues.
In the original piece, the site noted the frequency of stuttering - and drops to zero frames in some cases - on Xbox One, and how it could be related to the speed at which the console reads data off the internal hard drive. Knowing that both consoles utilise the same technology in that regard, even down to the drive speeds, the site decided to test the same areas again with new drives.
For Xbox One, mounting an external SSD solves the issue completely. SSDs of course are not practical for use as external storage, due to their prices, so the site tested with a 7200RPM drive (faster than internal 5400), and an SSHD. In both cases the stuttering issues were lessened, but the SSD naturally has a the clear advantage.
Newer drives, internal in PS4's case and external in Xbox One's, also improved load times on both consoles.
