Fallout 4 - How to Build the Ammunition Plant

Make your own bullets with an Ammunition Plant.

This guide will show players how to construct an Ammunition Plant, part of the Contraptions DLC in Fallout 4.

If you instead needed help with any other areas of Fallout 4, then be sure to head over to our Fallout 4 guides walkthrough hub, containing full quest walkthroughs as well as how to build the best base possible.

Building an Ammunition Plant in Fallout 4 will allow players to start producing their own bullets, rather than scavenging for it in the Commonwealth. While some players may have their perks set up in a way that makes this unnecessary, other players, like those on Survival Mode, will definitely find value in the ability to produce ammunition at their favorite settlement.

This screen shows the complete setup of our Ammunition Plant in Fallout 4.

Building an Ammunition Plant can be quite simple, but there’s a lot of room for you to go crazy and build a full-blown factory if you have the desire and resources. Since building an actual factory is quite similar to any other building in the game (the machinery just goes inside of it), we’re going to stick to the Ammunition Plant. Once you know how to build that, you can start experimenting with some of the more advanced options available.

How to Build the Ammunition Plant

The Ammunition Plant itself is found by entering the Workbench view in Fallout 4. Navigate to Power > Manufacturing > Machinery, and then scroll until you see the Ammunition Plant. You will need to unlock the Gun Nut Rank 1 and Science Rank 1 perks in order to build it. You’ll also need Circuitry x 2, Gear x 3, Rubber x 4 and Steel x 10. If you have all of that, you can build yourself an Ammunition Plant.

Depending on the layout of your factory, and how complex you want this process to be, you may wish to use a Conveyor Belt to transport your bullets from the Ammunition Plant to the Conveyor Storage (more on that in a moment). If you’re planning to build a Conveyor Belt, you’ll find it by browsing to Power > Manufacturing > Miscellaneous. The crafting items you need will vary depending on the type of Conveyor Belt, but generally you’ll need some combination of Steel, Screws, Rubber and Gears.

You'll actually see packs of bullets traveling along conveyor belts as you produce them.

To finish this piece of machinery off, you’ll want to build a Conveyor Storage to hold all of the bullets that your Ammunition Plant produces. This can connect to the Ammunition Plant directly, or it can connect to the opposite end of the Conveyor Belts you have running from your Ammunition Plant. You’ll find the Conveyor Storage under Power > Manufacturing > Miscellaneous. You’ll need Steel x 8, Screw x 1, Rubber x 2 and Gear x 1 if you wish to construct it.

When the pieces are all snapped together, you should have Ammunition Plant > Conveyor Belts > Conveyor Storage. Now, time to power it all up and connect it to a Terminal.

You’re going to need at least 9 Power for this build. We don’t mess around, so we built the Fusion Generator to give us 100 Power. You can do whatever works, just so long as you have a minimum of 9 Power to work with. Place your Generator, a Terminal, and a Switch close to your machinery, and then we’ll connect all the wires.

You can use the Terminal to tell the Ammunition Plant what type of bullets to produce.

Using wires, you’ll power your device by running from Generator > Terminal > Switch > Ammunition Plant. You could remove the Switch, but we like having it there to easily turn off the Ammunition Plant without having to mess with the Terminal.

All that’s left to do now is program the Terminal with the type of ammunition you want to produce, and add the required components to the Ammunition Plant. Do this the same way you would interact with any other container. Different types of ammunition will require different components, but all are made up of some combination of Lead, Fertilizer, Copper, Oil and Steel.

If you’ve done everything correctly, you should soon have boxes of ammunition traveling from your Ammunition Plant, across the Conveyor Belts and into the Conveyor Storage. You can approach the Conveyor Storage and pull out your bullets at any time, or walk away and let your factory put in some work while you explore the Commonwealth.
