Fallout 4: How to Build Robots - Ada, Curie, Codsworth
Build a unique robot companion in Fallout 4.
Fallout 4 initially presented few options in the way of robotic companions. However, thanks to the new Automatron DLC, players can build and upgrade friendly bots like never before. This guide will explain how to go about building robots in the Automatron DLC so that you can create your own customized, high-tech sidekick.
The option to build and upgrade robots comes relatively early in the Automatron DLC, provided one has accumulated enough resources. Players can not only build their own robot, but they can also upgrade existing robot companions, including Codsworth and Curie.
To begin building robot companions, you will first need to upgrade your workbench. Start the Automatron DLC by listening to the Caravan Distress Frequency using your Pip-boy radio. This will begin the Mechanical Menace quest. Complete this quest and continue on to the next quest, called A New Threat.
During A New Threat, you will be instructed to build a Robot Workbench in one of your settlements. Fast travel to a settlement, and access the Workshop interface. Open the Special tab, and scroll over to select the Robot Workbench. Building this special workbench requires several different resources: Gears (6), Oil (4), Screws (4), Plastic (4), Aluminum (12), Fiberglass (6), Circuitry (3), and Nuclear Material (4).
Once you have placed the Robot Workbench somewhere within your settlement, it can now be used to modify existing robots, or create a new one from scratch. Ada will volunteer to be the first test subject to help get you acquainted with the Robot Workbench.
To modify a robot, make sure they are assigned as your Companion, then bring them to the Robot Workbench. They don’t need to be standing in the workbench itself in order to be modified.
Access the Robot Workbench computer terminal, and select the name of the bot you’d like to modify. If you want to create a new robot, select New Automatron from the list. Keep in mind that you cannot access the Robot Workbench while wearing a suit of Power Armor.
The Robot Workbench works similarly to the Weapons Workbench. Robot modifications are organized by body part, along with a separate category for Special Mods. Your robot Companions can be outfitted with a variety of different customizations, ranging from powerful limbs and weapon attachments, to fresh new paint jobs. Each robot mod offers different benefits to suit your robot’s needs. For example, strong Sentry Legs can improve your bot Companion’s carrying capacity at the cost of movement speed.
Several modifications require bot parts that are primarily found throughout the Automatron DLC locations, such as Assaultron Heads. You can even discover entire weapon mods like the Mr. Handy Buzz Blade if you search well enough. Be sure to loot the remains of fallen robots in these areas to obtain the appropriate bot building materials, especially while playing Automatron DLC quests.
Robot mods can also be crafted using various components, including adhesive, aluminum, ceramic, circuitry, and rubber. Tag certain materials in order to keep track of what you need while scavenging. Some bot modifications will also require you to have specific perks unlocked, such as Science!, Armorer, Blacksmith, and Robotics Expert.
We recommend upgrading the Inspirational Perk within the Charisma perk tree if you intend to use your robot Companion often. The first rank of the Inspirational Perk allows your Companion to deal additional damage and prevents them from accidentally hurting you during combat. The next tier of this perk makes your robot Companion more resilient, and prevents you from harming them. These are great attributes to have if you plan on bringing your robot Companion into combat-heavy situations.
Robots are not the only ones to receive an upgrade. The Fallout 4 Automatron DLC also contains some special weapons and Power Armor for you to equip as well. Check out our Tesla Rifle and Tesla Power Armor Guide to learn where to find these useful combat items.
