If you preferred Fallout back in its isometric heyday, you're in for a treat.

Fallout 1.5: Resurrection is a Fallout 2 mod that bridges the gap between Fallout 1 and 2, set in New Mexico to the east of what will become NCR territory. While the map is around the same size as Fallout 1, you'll find a lot more quests to get involved in that can be resolved in a ton of different ways.

The story starts off with the player waking up in a cave with amnesia. The rest of the game is spent finding out how and why you got there.

The Easter eggs and jokes that peppered Fallout 2 have been set aside in favour of a darker tone, described by the devs as "a great atmosphere of decadence and hopelessness...The world is still chaotic, with only a few, small, independent communities connected by tenuous trade relations. The wasteland is an unfriendly place where law is on the side of whoever has the biggest gun."

On the topic of the resurrection theme, they went on to say, "our aim was to bring back this classic RPG in its original form. Many remember that feeling when they first played Fallout; until you completed the game, you journeyed through interesting locations filled with fascinating things. Even after several play-throughs, you continued to find new, exciting stuff. Players could really get into such a game, so that's exactly the kind of game we've endeavoured to create."

You can download the English version now, which comes three years after the release of the Czech version. It's totally free and looks awesome.

If you get a chance to give it a whirl, let us know how you get on in the comments.
