Nature inspires "more terrifying, f**ked-up s**t" than Evolve's devs could come up with alone
Evolve's first monster, the Goliath, was inspired by movies like Godzilla and King Kong. But there are more fearsome foes to face, and for these Turtle Rock drew on darker inspirations than the mind of man could provide.
Evolve's monsters are quite different, not just in appearance and powers but in how they were created, according to creative director Phil Robb.
"With Goliath, we went for classic. The first monster is everything you expect from a giant monster, it should do everything you would want to do: throw giant rocks, breathe fire, jump huge distances, climb up walls. All that stuff," he told Shack News.
"So we looked at Godzilla and King Kong, those two particular monsters were a huge inspiration for Goliath."
The Goliath was the first monster to be shown off after the asymmetrical shooter finally saw reveal, but at E3 2014 we met Evolve's second big beast, the Kraken.
"With Kraken it gets a little more obscure. A lot of people have compared him to Cthulu, but we also looked at a lot of nature. We're big fans of Sir David Attenborough," Robb said.
"I've got to tell you, man, nature comes up with more terrifying, f**ked up s**t than we could ever come up with. So deep down in the sea, where there's giant squids - if you look at the way Kraken moves, it's very much like a giant squid. It's very much based on those creepy deep sea creatures."
Sweet. The full interview contains some interesting discussion of where the idea for Evolve came from, and notes that in testing, Turtle Rock hasn't been able to get players to stop being the monster once they get their chance.
Evolve is due on PC, PS4 and Xbox One in October.
