EVE Online developer CCP closes San Francisco office
EVE Online developer CCP Games announced in its latest financial report it has opted to close its studio n San Francisco.
It was also announced that both CFO Hoe Gallo and CMO David Reid, who left Trion Worlds in 2012 to join the firm, left the firm "of their own volition." *
For the current fiscal year, revenues for the company cam in at $36.5 million compared to $36.7 million the prior year. Earnings were down to $4.5 million compared to $8.3 million year-over-year.
CCP's CEO Hilmar Veigar Petursson noted in the financials the company would remain focused on the EVE Online universe, and due to World of Darkness's cancellation in April, it would no longer cause an overreaching effect on the company’s resources. The cancelling of the MMO at the Atlanta studio earlier this resulted in the loss of 56 job while some staffers were moved to other projects.
As Gamasutra notes, the cancellation of the MMO resulted in "considerable costs, including termination and write-down costs for certain assets."
In 2011, CCP laid off approximately 20% of its workforce, with most redundancies occurring in the same Atlanta, Georgia office. Select positions at the Reykjavik, Iceland studio were affected. The lay-offs, CCP said at the time, would “sharpen,” its focus on EVE Online and DUST 514 and continue development on World of Darkness with a “significantly reduced team.”
*The original report stated both executives were part of the redundancies. CCP has clarified to VG247 both voluntarily left the firm and that the split was amicable.
