EA issues update regarding affected GameSpy titles, promises "investigating community-supported options"
EA has issued an update following this morning's confirmation that 50 of its titles will lose multiplayer and online functionality when GameSpy shuts down in June.
The update was posted on the EA news blog, and it acknowledged the issue.
"Since GameSpy’s announcement, our teams have been working to evaluate options to keep services up and running," read the update. "Unfortunately, due to technical challenges and concerns about the player experience, we do not have a solution at this time. Online services for EA games on the GameSpy platform will be closed down at the end of June."
Despite that, the update called titles like Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 1942 fan favourites, and promised that the firm is "still investigating community-supported options to preserve online functionality for these titles," and that "significant technical hurdles remain."
The update ended saying that the firm has nothing to announce for the time being.
Community-supported options could mean patching older games or providing master server alternatives to GameSpy, something which EA isn't known for doing.
