Drakengard 3 announced in latest Famitsu, reunites Cavia team
Drakengard 3 is coming, according to reports out of Japan. I'm caught between piling salt on and swallowing my own face in excitement.
The news comes via NeoGAF, RPGSite, and Siliconera's generally reliable leak sources.
According to these reports, Drakengard 3, or Drag-on Dragoon 3 as it is known in Japan, is a PlayStation 3 exclusive action RPG.
The main character is a girl called Zero, who has a younger sister named One. Zero and One are both Utautai - "songstresses" - who can use magic via music. The two sisters have different skillsets. Zero has a flower in place of one of her eyes and a prosthetic arm, and is said to be reckless. One is more serious and intellectual.
The action of the game is split between ground and aerial battles, as in previous instalments, and as the main character is covered in blood, her power increases.
What makes all this so interesting is that Drakengard developer Cavia is no more; the team was dissolved into Marvellous AQL, and no further titles were expected from the group. According to an additional report from Siliconera, publisher Square Enix has gathered a number of the old guard to work on the title.
Nier and Drakengard 1 director Taro Yoko will reprise his role and also serve as scenario creator. Character design comes courtesy of Drakengard 1 and The Last Story artist Kimihiko Fujisaka. Nier composer Keiichi Okabe will provide the soundtrack. Drakengard 1 producer Takamasa Shiba returns for the third entry in the same role.
According to further comments on NeoGAF and Twitter, the developer is Access Games, the team behind Deadly Premonition. Both Cavia and Access are no strangers to gore and envelope-pushing themes, which is born out by early images of the article.
Cavia's last major release before dissolution was Nier, which had some plot ties to the Drakengard series.
