DOTA 2 beta: Press to be added in "a few weeks"

Valve has confirmed to VG247 that it's preparing to add journalists to the closed DOTA 2 beta, following news that the game itself won't ship until next year.

Speaking by email, a Valve rep said today that press would be added to a beta list in "a few weeks," but declined to respond to an enquiry as to whether or not the open beta would go live this year.

DOTA 2 beta sign-ups were opened just before gamescom, going live on August 16.

Originally planned for a 2011 launch, DOTA 2 is now confirmed as a 2012 release: Eurogamer got word of the new date from Gabe Newell in Cologne last week.

DOTA 2 made its first appearance at the German show, with Ukraine-based team Na’Vi winning the RTS's inaugural championships and a $1 million prize.

The vent was streamed live.

DOTA 2 is the follow-up to Warcraft III mod Defence of the Ancients. Blizzard is working on its own DOTA sequel for Starcraft II, although the firm admitted yesterday that the effort has been "completely rebooted" since being shown at Blizzcon last year.

Blizzard's new DOTA will be releasing around the same time as Heart of the Swarm, the second part of the StarCraft II trilogy.
