DOOM 3:BFG Edition - id's "first inclination" was to make "big sweeping changes" to the game
Eric Webb, producer on DOOM 3: BFG Edition at id Software, has told the PS Blog the team went through "a few different iterations," of the game in order to make sure the 3D felt right in it, and while doing so, the team also pushed aside it's inclination to make "big sweeping changes," in order to keep the core experience there along side the additions.
"Our first inclination [was] to make big sweeping changes because it’s something that you’ve looked at for a long time, so it doesn’t feel fresh anymore," said Webb. "We’ve really focused on keeping the core experience there. From talking to people on the show floor [at E3], a lot of them weren’t too happy with the idea of the flashlight as something separate. So integrating the flashlight into your main weapon seemed like a no-brainer, yet even then we still had people say they wanted to play the original way.
"Another piece of feedback we had was that the game was too dark, so we’ve lit it some more here and there and tried to lead the player’s eye a little more. So there’ll be two modes – the original, unchanged version of Doom 3 and the updated one.'
While the team made textural improvements to the characters and demons, it also completely rewrote the network code so the multiplayer would be a better experience.
There's also the addition of the Lost Mission Pack which contains seven new levels which pick up from a certain part of the story line in the main game
"You’re a different guy in a different part of the base but it’s the same world," said Webb.
With all the changes made to the third game in DOOM series, Webb noted that the first two in the collection were "pretty much straight ports," but they run at 60fps, "even with four-player split screen play going on."
"If you’ve got a big TV that’s really going to stand out. The guys basically wrote it from scratch to get it working on PS3," added Webb. "I think the game feels fresh. It was very modern and very aggressive, and you had to have a very high end PC to run it back in the day whereas now it’s running happily on PS3 in 720p high resolution.
DOOM 3 BFG Edition will arrive in North America on October 16 and throughout Europe on October 19.
The title features the re-mastered versions of both DOOM 3, the Resurrection of Evil add-on pack, and seven new levels of content entitled The Lost Mission. It also contains the original DOOM and DOOM II.
It will run you $29.99 on PC and $39.99 on PS3 and Xbox 360.
