Disney Infinity delayed into August
Toys-to-life sandbox Disney Infinity has been pushed back to the end of northern summer to bring it closer to the holiday season.
The New York Times reports the core Disney Infinity game and all accompanying accessories have been delayed form an expected June launch to August 18 in North America and August 20 internationally.
Disney Interactive co-president John Pleasants said retailers asked for a launch closer to the holiday season, when toy sales go mega.
“The date became an issue in terms of them asking, ‘Is there a better opportunity here?'" he said.
The executive made a point of stressing that there are no problems or issues which have contributed to the delay.
"We could deliver in June if we wanted to. Will a two-month timing change help us? Sure, of course. It gives us a little more time to add bells and whistles and make sure it really sings and pops," he said.
The delay does mean the launch misses some excellent cross-promotional opportunities with the theatrical release of Monsters University, but it still gets in ahead of the next Skylanders launch.
"We think it’s good to be first and really lean into the most important selling season of the year," Pleasants said.
On the negative, it leaves Disney Interactive with just one month to rake in profits before its financial year ends in mid-September; Pleasants and his colleagues had promised to return the struggling division to profitability this year.
Disney Infinity is headed to 3DS, PS3, Wii U and Xbox 360, and will be supported by mobile apps. As well as the core game, you'll be able to buy playset expansions, individual figures, and various accessories.
