Digimon will get a "survival-simulation RPG" in 2019

Digimon Survive will celebrate the anime's 20th anniversary with a gorgeous-looking RPG.

Digimon may not be nearly as recognizable as Nintendo's Pokemon, but it remains a solid, long-running franchise. And fans have a new reason to be excited: Bandai Namco has announced a survival-RPG that will be a new iteration of the series, and it will get a Western release.

Digimon Survive was revealed in a livestream from Bandai Namco yesterday, and is presented as a "survival-simulation RPG". It follows a new group of teenagers who get lost during a camping trip and are mysteriously transported to a nostalgic world of monsters. As you can likely guess, some of these monsters become your friends!

The trailer is fairly light on details, and gameplay visuals are brief. As noted by Eurogamer, Digimon Survive appears to blend conventions of visual novels and survival-RPG battles. Any survival mechanics beyond those systems are not clear at this time.

Still, the trailer certainly has an emotional punch, and should get long-time fans excited. Digimon Survive is expected to launch in 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch.
