Destiny vault space upgrade will have enough room for every Exotic

Destiny is finally getting the vault space upgrade players have been begging for almost since launch week.

Destiny players can currently use vault space to store 20 pieces of amour, 20 weapons and 20 general item stacks.

In the latest Bungle Weekly Update, the developer revealed that as of patch 1.1.2, due before House of Wolves drops, that will be increased.

The new totals are 24 armour pieces, 36 weapons, and 24 item stacks. This will allow you to store every Exotic from launch through House of Wolves, according to live team lead M.E. Chung.

The vault expansion has had consequences; PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 users can no longer compare their items within the vault. UI engineering lead Brad Field explained:

"In the case of the Vault expansion, it became clear that we would be pushing very limited memory constraints on older generation hardware. We had a choice: leave the Vault as-is, or find some kind of compromise to enable it safely," he said.

So why has this taken so long? Well, user research lead John Hopson said most users don't have a full vault, and many of those who do are hanging on to rubbish.

"Very few people have completely full Vaults, but a lot of endgame players are bumping up against the limits," he said.

"For example, 21% of players who are level 30+ have four or fewer free spaces in their weapon Vaults right now. The armor and general sections are slightly less full for most people, but not by much.

"Even at lower levels, there’s a small but measurable fraction of players under level 20 who have full Vaults. You could charitably think of them as 'collectors' or uncharitably label them as 'packrats,' but some people just flat out like holding onto their stuff."

I feel like Bungie have missed out on an important consideration here, which is that it's much easier to switch weapons in and out of your vault and inventory at the Tower if you have at least one spare slot in each. However, Chung said this increase is a short term solution, so there may be more expansions to come in the future.

Hopefully pushing all your least favourite Exotics into the Vault will leave you the inventory space you need to juggle the Legendaries you use and collect new loot on the regular.
