Ever wondered what Destiny's Rasputin is saying?
Destiny features an AI Warmind called Rasputin, which plays a key but mysterious role in the story. But what does the Russian computer actually say?
Destiny charts one small portion of a much larger story. During the events of the story campaign, players come into repeated contact with Rasputin, and each time the AI rattles on in Russian.
I don't speak Russian at all, so I've had no idea what the machine was saying - or even if it was saying anything meaningful at all. Luckily, Redditor Blue_Catastrophe has taken it upon themselves to translate the relevant text and even track them down some of them as quotations. Here they are:
From Alexander Herzen's The Other Shore: Epilogue 1849, a treatise on the failure of European revolutionary movements after 1848:
"There's no one to blame, it is not their fault or ours. It is the misfortune of being born when the whole world is dying."
A partial paraphrase of a line from Fodor Dostoyevsky's The Brothers Karamazov:
"There is no immortality of soul, thus there is no greater good. Therefore everything is permitted."
An as-yet unsourced line:
"If, as they say, the coming events cast their shadows ahead of time, then the past events cannot but leave their reflections behind them."
Another unsourced line:
"They are but meat pressed in the mouth of the shell."
Fans have speculated as to what all this might mean, if anything. Is Rasputin on humanity's side, or against us? Is it resisting the forces of the Darkness because it is their enemy, or in self-preservation? How has its meddling affected human history? And what are its plans?
I'm super excited to see how the story of Destiny develops over the next few expansions. It really is a lot of fun to go looking for more than the shallow mission sequence offers.
