From Destiny to Game of Thrones: Bungie writer jumps ship for TellTale
Destiny is one heck of a writing gig, but if you had the chance to write Game of Thrones - well, you can't blame Joshua Rubin for jumping at it, can you?
Destiny writer Joshua Rubin has announced his departure from Bungie for a pretty sweet new position at TellTale Games.
Rubin will be working on the adventure developer's adaptation of Game of Thrones, and seems both humbled and excited by the challenge of meeting the expectations of fans of the HBO series.
No word on meeting George R.R. Martin's standards; insert joke about taking forever to produce new material here. Or not; personally, we're in the "Martin is not your slave" camp, although a bit worried about how fast the Starks are growing up. Good thing Maisie Williams seems to have an eternal face, and Rickon goes AWOL for so long it doesn't matter.
But I digress: back to Rubin, who is giving up his chance to continue shaping the ever-evolving sci-fi epic of Destiny.
According to Gamespot, prior to joining Bungie Rubin spent a year at Capcom and Visceral Games, but the projects he worked on there have not yet materialised. He must be a pretty talented fellow to find a place on the excellent Telltale team with no released games to his credit yet. That's heartening for both Destiny and Game of Thrones.
Now that Destiny is less than a month from launch (you guys I'm so ready, I'm so ready, cancel TGS) it's a natural time for talent to be leaving the project after literal years of working on one thing alone, which can be very wearing. As such, I wouldn't worry too much about Rubin's exit affecting the game.
That said, taking it in conjunction with Joe Staten's departure it's a little concerning. Let's hope no more of Destiny's creative team jump ship, or the original vision might be lost by the time we get to the planned sequels.
Just while I'm airing entirely speculative worries, Marty O'Donnell left Bungie, too - not amicably. What's going on over there, friends?
Anyway, Destiny comes out on PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One on September 9.
