Destiny 2: sniper rifles, swords, fusion rifles ... which of the 6 power weapon categories will you choose?

Destiny 2 has some new last chance boomsticks for you.

Destiny 2 makes some significant changes to how weapons are equipped. Although you can still equip three weapons at a time, gone are the days of primary, secondary and heavy; in Destiny 2 you have a kinetic, energy and power slot.

The power weapon slot plays a similar role to the old heavy weapon category, in that it contains really powerful weapons you'll use less frequently than the other weapon kinds. But the types of weapon you can keep in this slot in Destiny 2 are more varied than the rocket launchers, machine guns and swords of the first game.

As Arekkz explains in the video above, Destiny 2's power weapons category includes sniper rifles, shotguns and fusion rifles - previously seen as secondary weapons in the original Destiny. These three weapon archetypes came to dominate PvP in the original Destiny, so it's interesting to see them put into a category, which we'll presumably use less often.

The new grenade launcher category in Destiny 2 is also a power weapon type, and there are two more returning weapon types which feature as power weapons in Destiny 2 - rocket launchers and swords. (There seems to be greater variety in this last category this time around; check out all Destiny 2 swords so far.)

There's been no word on machine guns, but that's not to say they won't make an appearance eventually, along with other kinds of weapon. Bungie has not finished revealing Destiny 2; not by a long shot.

Now that we're all caught up on power weapons, you might want to check in with an explanation of Destiny 2's kinectic and energy weapon types as well. For everything else, see our Destiny 2 intel hub.

Destiny 2 releases in September for PS4 and Xbox One.

The PC version of Destiny 2 has not been dated.
